Clausewitz: Nebel des Krieges
I thought it might be interesting to talk about how the U.S. Marines are trained to make decisions in the fog of war. They call it the 70% solution. If you have 70% of the information you’d like to have If you’ve done 70% of the analysis that you think is required And feel 70% confident that you are right, then get on with it The Marine Corp teaches their young officers that a well-reasoned...

Private equity investors are financial engineers
A few quotes from this nice article: The tricks investors use against us Private Equity investors are foremost rewarded for protecting their fund’s capital. We are more interested in good low-risk businesses, than great high-risk businesses. What we won’t mention is that very few of the people we deal with represent good, solid, low-risk businesses willing to sell equity at below market...

Multiple Outgoing Email Addresses on your iPad or...
It is an obvious oversight/triage that iOS out of the box does not support multiple email addresses to send from. My usage scenario is as follows: Have one mobile.me mailbox with it’s superior push feature and the ability to search through mail while on the go. Because I am working on a handful of projects in parallel I use a few ‘real’ (not reply-to or mobile.me aliases)...

Linux on iOS devices as app
For developing software based on a Linux/BSD stack on the go, it would be very neat to have an app-encapsulated light Linux or BSD running in userland on e.g. the iPad. Linux/BSD would simply expose an SSH- and http-port (or more) to other apps on the iDevice. This way you could work on and test code on the go in your favourite stack (LAMP, Rails, Django…) without relying on a...

Solved: Kindle for PC error "Registration timed...
No need to work with an older installer, 1.4.1 just works fine. What got it working for me was: Go to ‘Internet Options’, ‘Advanced’-Tab and disable ‘Check for revoked certificates’ or something similar. It’s way down in the list, in the ‘Security’ group. Now just close and re-open Kindle for PC, and register your Reader. Voilá!

Feed my kindle - with Instapaper.com
I found two services to feed my kindle with stuff that Amazon doesn’t offer: Instapaper.com and kindlefeeder.com These services are somewhat different in scope, mostly kindlefeeder being an automated feed pusher to the kindle (at least in the premium version) and Instantpaper being the famous manual multi-platform extended bookmarking and visual-spam reducer it is. I can wholeheartedly...

The advantages of doing things in software on a single device are so great that everything that can get turned into software will. So for the next couple years, a good recipe for startups will be to look around you for things that people haven’t realized yet can be made unnecessary by a tablet app.
